On Dec. 30, 2019, the Deerfield Beach (Fla.) ​community was jolted by the death of football ​player and IB student Bryce Gowdy, a 4-star ​wide receiver known for his talent on the ​football field, intelligence in the classroom, ​and affable aura among his friends and ​family. After his passing was ruled a suicide, ​his mother, Shibbon Winelle, and close friends ​launched The Bryce Gowdy Foundation (BGF) ​to highlight mental health in minority ​communities and teen football players.

On Monday, April 4, Elon Musk, the billionaire ​CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, finalized a 9.2 ​percent stake in Twitter according to a ​regulatory filing with the Securities and ​Exchange Commission (SEC). Musk initially ​paid $2.64 billion for 73,115,038 Twitter ​shares, but by Monday night, after news of his ​purchase sent Twitter’s share price up more ​than 27 percent, it became worth around $3.7 ​billion.

You may be familiar with the term K-Drama, ​but if not, let me introduce you. K-Dramas are ​television series produced in South Korea and ​spoken in Korean. Just a disclaimer that once ​you get into this genre, there’s no getting out. ​There’s something about K-Dramas that reel ​you in and rile up every emotion you never ​knew you had, like extreme happiness, ​extreme sadness and especially extreme ​cringe. But, you’ll love every second of it. ​According to Soompi, K-Dramas are like the ​perfect cupcake with typically 16 one-hour-​long episodes that can be binge-watched in a ​week or two. No more waiting for that second ​or third season!

On BackTalk with Nyala and Laita, Nyala Thomas and Laita ​Barrett encourage conversation about how pop culture impacts ​the youth.

HC: How would you describe the content of BackTalk with NL?

NT & LB: We consider the content of BackTalk to be a pop ​culture commentary on the most relevant topics in the world of ​entertainment... As two young Black women who find ​themselves invested in popular culture, our web show aims to ​stimulate and encourage conversation in how popular culture ​affects the youth. We have found that Black female voices are ​often silenced and/or excluded from discourse within the ​entertainment field, so we decided to make a lane for ​ourselves. In terms of goals, we want to extend this space to ​other minorities as a way to find and make representation for ​themselves in entertainment.
